More foreign students = education excellence? What kind of logic is that?
Malaysia aims to double to 100,000 from the present 50,000 the number of foreign students at local tertiary learning institutions by 2010, Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed said.
He said the government would embark on a dual-pronged approach to realise the target, which he described would be a “significant increase” to achieve the government’s goal to turn the country into a centre of education excellence. [Bernama]
For me, it’s another 50,000 foreigners getting to know how poor the tertiary learning institutions are. Shouldn’t the ministry focus on improving our universities’ standards before thinking of attracting more foreign students?

Australia is the better choice as education in Australia is affordable for many Asians now. Do a 2 year course and you can even migrate there now. Students can earn some money during their training as working 20 hours a week is allowed.
The real bonus is the migration PLUS portability of the qualifications gained as well as discrimination being illegal, a great lifestyle and real democracy. And,yes, citizenship after 4 years as PR!

Agreed with AMP. Australia nearest real democractic country.
i think this move is totarget the other muslim countires to send their children here not so much as to attract the non muslim countries like Thailand,India etc. like u said, the education system isn’t that of a ’standard’ to attract. maybe enroll one get one free..lol. or 1st child full cost, 2nd child reduced and so on.
Malaysia Boleh!!!.

RM… I won’t go into religious or racial issue here, I doubt it is the case. Besides, I believe the largest group of foreign students in Malaysia is from China.
I just met a Chinese student (studying in HELP) on Saturday; seems like Malaysia are doing pretty good publicity there. I just hope that all these foreign students will get some good education here.

Doing whatever it takes to attract foreign students into malaysia is alright, provided they want to come, especially from less developed countries like china, indonesia or middle east, it is better if the revenue generated can be used to send outstanding Malaysian students from poor family oversea for a world class post graduate education.
