filipino is a nationality. malaysian is a nationality. indonesian is a nationality. malay is an ethnic group in malaysia, indonesia and brunei. it just so happened that the malay peoples are related to the other ethnic groups in indonesia, brunei, sabah, sarawak, east timor and the philippines. complicated? sure the malaysian politicians make it complicated. most indonesians i met (they are javanese) are offended when malaysians call them "malay". malay = ehtnic group, not a race. sorry too long.

filipino here.

Malay is not limited to people born in Malaysia. Malay is a term for a race of brown skinned race. Sad to say that some people specially in malaysia or in singapore would look at Malay as a citizenship or a race associated to being a muslim. It is like Caucasians or hmmm...Arab...this is the same term to be used for people who comes from the South East Asian countries. The term is for race and not for nationality or citizenship or not for religion.
Jose Rizal is considered the Champion of Malay race. If you will trace his roots is actually chinese. The mom has native filipino blood or we call as Malay. Since Rizal grew up in Manila and he considered himself as a NATIVE FILIPINO-thus his race is considered Malay.
The name Jose Mercado Rizal is actually to denote his ancestry's chinese merchant's heritage-in spanish mercado means market. The name Jose Rizal is an invented name just like many chinese-filipino who wants to assimilate in to the Filipino society.

Sooo..long..hehehe..Malay is a term synonymous to ARAB, CAUCASIANS-IT DENOTES BLOODLINE NOT A NATIONALITY OR ASSOCIATION TO A RELIGION..THANKS.,,visit malaysia..

Seems like a nice trip Joshy.

You are probably right about Taiwan aborigines being in the same regional race. Haven't done any deep research, can't confirm though.
