Madrid Fashion Week make an unprecented move to ban overly-thin models from the catwalk. So far 5 models are banned from the 44th annual fashion show, “Pasarela Cibeles.”
Don’t get fooled by the numbers though, because only 68 international models showed up for appraisal whereas in previous years theres over 300.
That probably means that some 200+ models already knew that they are going to fail the weight test and didn’t even bother to show up.
The fashion show organizers used Body Mass Index (BMI) of below 18 as the par. According to WHO, BMI of below 18.5 is considered an unhealthy weight.
According to some news, supermodels like Kate Moss and Elle MacPherson would be kick off as well if they were to go for the Madrid fashion show.
I think it’s a brave move by Madrid, they are going against the bone-beauty trend that goes to an extension of risking health for ‘beauty’.
Lots of youngster are becoming over obsessed with weight.. I can see how my friends eating a meal a day to keep a slim figure, that’s ridiculous.
I’m not putting the blame on those models though, people have to be responsible for what they choose to follow.
Still it’s nice in my opinion for the modelling world to take some action to coup with the overly-thin image as well.
So far Milan is the only other major fashion show to seek similar requirement for fashion models. New York actually strongly protest against Madrid’s move, stating that it’s discrimination.

It’s about time….not all cats are skinny…Garfield is not…it’s been a long time this catwalks fashion cater to only ’skinny’ people as per their models.
Don’t the designers/organisers know that people comes in all shapes and sizes. They should have models of all shapes and ages
Well done Madrid !!

Actually it’s getting worse every now and then.. models in 80s are still more ‘meaty’, like Cindy Crawford etc.
The standard are getting thinner and slimmer, to the current stage that it’s becoming unhealthy.. that’s too much.
It’s probably not the best move, but at least Madrid is doing something to raise the awareness. Kudos to that.
