Malaysia public universities’ standard are dropping all these years, people are wondering if it’s still worth studying in local universities. Fact is however for lots of the future undergraduates, they don’t have much options because of financial issues.
Despite the general dipping of quality in Malaysia universities, studying in local Unis can still be resourceful and interesting. Here is Jee’s 7 tips to improve your university life in Malaysia public universities..
1. Read more international journals
Learning from text books is not adequate, and in Malaysia public universities, lots of the text books are outdated. To learn more, read from international journals instead.
If you can find useful and updated journals from libraries, great; else go for online journals. Last time I use to visit Emerald for engineering related papers, I’m sure you can find similar websites for your related studies.
Reading from these journals might not help in scoring a 4 flat, as exams are based on what the lecturers have taught. Between good grading and extra knowledge, the choice is in your hands.
2. Find a part time job
Don’t even mention that you will be too busy studying, local university life is quite easy and you will always have too much time to spare.
Get a job that you know you won’t be doing after graduation, sell chicken in KFC, feed animals in zoos, serve coffee in KLCC, or even sell sex at Bukit Bintang (now that’s a joke).
After graduation you will be stuck in a 9-5 job if you are lucky enough to get employed, and you will probably have no chance to work in odd jobs. So do it during your uni studies as part of your life experience.
3. Join some university projects
Most local universities will have various of student activities, in sports, academic, social, culture etc. Find a project that you are interested with and join as committee, you will learn a lot.
Also if you are not an organizer, learn to take part or just visit other university activities to have a peek or so, cherish every part of your university happenings.
4. Mix around with ALL your mates
ALL, as of all regardless of racial, religion and sex.
Local university is the best place we can learn about other races, but sadly in most cases, the undergraduates tend to mix with their own kind and miss the chance for better understanding.
For peace and harmony sake, make friends with ALL your mates.
5. The local universities are unfair, live with it
If you are not a bumiputera, you will start learning all the unfairness in live studying in local universities. Quota is just the beginning, you will start wondering and questioning a lot of issues.
If you can do something to change the unbalance of treatment, fine.. else just live with it. This is Malaysia, there are something that are not going to change in the near future, and we got to learn living with the environment.
For some bumis that often enjoy privelleges, time to catch up as well.
6. Get a boy/girlfriend, fall in love!
I always believe the greatest things in life are learnt from a love relationship, so let’s fall in love.
You should be better in communication, toleration, time management (serious!), responsibility, sensitivity and human behaviors blah blah.
And yes, love is beautiful.
7. Relax, enjoy and have fun
Study hard? Yes.
Live your life to the fulliest? Yes.
Relax, enjoy and have fun? Yes, Yes, Yes.
University is a fun place to be at, despite all the studies, activities and even part time jobs.. it’s a place to have fun. Mix with your friends, travel a bit, party a bit or fall in love, whatever it is.. enjoy your university life and have fun.

With the present situation in local Universities where Girls outnumber boys, no. 6 might be a problem. Most girls complain that all the eligible guys are taken and the rest are gays.
