Am I the only one who think that the American Idol audiences are giving standing ovation rather easy to the contestants? I mean the audiences are giving standing ovation to every idol regardless of their performance, making the recognition so cheap.

I always thought that standing ovation is a high recognition for special honor, outstanding achivement or for highly respectable person. But for American Idol.. I don’t know.

I like the way Oscar did it, even the winners of best picture or best actor/actress might not get the standing ovation. Standing ovation are normally given to lifetime achievement awards recognition, or something special like when Tom Hanks won his 2nd successive Oscar years ago (he’s only the 2nd actor to have achieve it).

Else in sports, standing ovation will normally be given to the final one and only winner, or someone that really give some great performance, like defeating Roger Federer in tennis perhaps. We won’t see standing ovation on every match.

Say soccer.. you won’t get a standing ovation for scoring a goal or showing some tricks. Scoring a hattrick or some real masterful display, maybe yes.

So back to American Idol.. I am not sure whether the producers ask the audience to do so or what, but please keep your butts on the chair sometimes. Giving recognition too easily makes the standing ovation for some true great performance meaningless if everyone is getting it.

Oh Ya.. btw please continue to vote for Katharine Mcphee :p

i guess nowadays they attribute the standing ovation to being akin to loud applause….i remembered the few concerts i went to, the standing ovations were usually at the end..or mebbe when a particularly nice piece of music was being performed

    used differently nowadays i guess?

The meaning for standing ovation is still more or less the same in most places.. just that I think it’s a bit over for American Idol.
