Also another fact:
Mr Charuruks does not sell orchids there.
Unless there is an illegal market from someone internally.

The Australian Government gave financial grants to build the Australian Memorial Hall (for viewing of WW2 Documentary films) the perimeter fencing and demolition and reconstruction of contemplation garden.
The latest construction is the confrontation memorial which was officiated yesterday, 27th April 2012.

I may not sure where ppl are getting information from and which KK sources they are.

There are many ppl not liking Sevee Charuruks being the official guardian because he is not local to the area.
Some local ppl and expats living in Sabah for years do not like to see his work succeed. The fact is, it has brought positive change.
The local council had for years neglected the memorial. I personally visited the place numerous times as a child with my parents, and the place is always dilapidated and embarrassing for tourists.
And when someone (not local Sabahan like Mr Charuruks) decides to make a change with his own initiatives, it rattles jealousy from others.
A small town is bound to have a tall poppy syndrome.
Success of others is not liked.

The fact is: Mrs Silver did not contribute financial but may have helped out by spreading the good work through her writing. She is a good writer.

Mr Charuruks has looked after his employees well, he does not scrooge on them but is fair.
He provides them lunch.
Mostly local women, (having the need to work hard because of their children) whilst their husbands drink away at kopi tiams down the hill.
I have met some of these women myself.
Am not sure whether you have spoken to the local husbands or the wives themselves.

If you really want the real facts, speak to the right ppl - directly to Mr Charuruks.

This was not built as a memorial, it is the original site where the POW's were held captive by the Japanese - hense the high walls, and why none could escape while captive here.

I am not too sure where you got your details from about mr. sevee funding the memorial. He sells orchids from there and the Au gvernment recently gave him 130,000 AUD Grant to help him out. KK sources tell me that the Malaysian Govt also helped him out. Also he has family working in tourism who would help out.He did do a lot of work there and so did all of his poorly paid local men and women. Many foreigners have given him money too. Mrs Lynette silver also helped him out. Nice memorial and good to see Malaysians recognised for their efforts and feel very sorry for many Aussies and English who died defending democracy all around Asia from Japanese Imperial Forces. I lke to see Japanese Govt donate some funds to upkeep memorials like Sandakan and Ranau too in good shape forever

I hope we don't need to build more war memorials in future, that's for sure. However if there is continuous indifference between mankind, there will be war and they will be more war memorials... kinda sad isn't it?
