Enochiophobia, also known as Demophobia, Crowd Phobia or in simple English.. Fear of Crowds.

I can’t recall since when, but I have a reluctancy to go to places with lots of people. I won’t actually name myself a crowd phobic, as I can handle the situation when needed, just 99% hate it.

I only attended a concert once, almost never visit a shopping mall during massive discount offered, rarely visit a cinema and I hate taking public transport.

I don’t like to eat in crowded places and absolutely hate sharing tables with others, I hate traffic jams, I don’t like disco and I don’t like waiting in queue.

I never visited Batu Caves for Thaipusam, I hate Sunday markets, I don’t like attending festival celebrations and I pretty much don’t like attending a Chinese wedding dinner.

Come to think of it.. I might even have Acousticophobia or Fear of Noise. I don’t favor places where lots of people are talking or noisy in other senses.

And guess what.. all the above actually leads me to possible Social Phobia or social anxiety.

Oh gosh, I am a freak!!

I don’t think I’m a phobic, but I’m extremely scared of pigeons [in fact, all birds]. I ran out of the kitchen today because I could see pigeons through the window that were perched on the opposite building! You can imagine the amusement of my friends …

So, what’s a fear of pigeons called then, Jee?

tanya… I am not sure if your situation can be categorized as phobia (I am not the expert). There are sometimes funny situation… like me, I am not afraid of rat, but if I see a few dozens of them coming at me… well, that will be a different situation.

I absolutely hate the noise in my house. i still live with my parents tho i’m eighteen. i hate the noise in the kitchen like 1 hour before bedtime. why does it have to be that there’s more stuff to do during the evening like this? why can’t my parents just do it earlier and get the cooking business out of the way? i’m serious when i say the noise is loud. i mean, come on, it’s the freaking kitchen. once i hear the noise i start obsessing about it and thinking about the frequency and noise level of the next sound and stuff. am i nuts?

Whenever I am in a big crowd I get really pissed off. Hahaha! I’m never afraid of them I just get so irritated when people are surrounding me. Even if they are a good enough distance away, if there are alot of people it just agitates me. So I rarely ever go shopping like at Wal-Mart, Target, etc. There’s just too many people.

Hi, I am very concerned about my son Bradley,he`s 11 and is not keen on going out very far.He is quite happy in his own company, but plays well with 2 or 3 friends indoors. He plays out sometimes, but prefers building dens in the garden.Last year we went to Disneyland Paris, and he held onto my arm the whole time we were there. He loved the rides, seemed quite happy but I could hardly move without falling over him.He isn`t normally clingy. He loves 1 to 1 attention, but would usually run off and play.We are booked to go again this year taking my daughter and grandchildren. My son does not want to go,he has asked to stay with his father instead (we were divorced a few years ago).In the past he has mentioned that he doesn`t always like going into class as there are too many people. He was once sick in front of the whole school in assembly and has since been terrifiied of a reoccurence,to the point that if he has a stomach ache or is slightly nauseous,he panics and asks to be taken to the sick bay.I have had several calls about this but am loathe to keep collecting him from school as I feel he needs to get over it himself.I am trying to gleen from him the reason he doesn`t want to come on holiday, but he is a closed shop and reluctant to share his feeings .I was wondering if he may have a slight phobia of crowded places,or could there be another reason for this behaviour? He and his brother have lots of attention,my partner and I support them in whatever they want to do, they have weekend sleepovers when they want ,although Bradley does not like to stay overnight anywhere else,he prefers his friends to stay with us.
We spent the last half term in Great Yarmouth visiting my brother and his family (we take my parents every year)but Bradley was a nightmare,he got in a bad mood everyday, refusing to do anything or go anywhere,he ran off in a shopping mall and sulked for ages.He has always had a tendency to misbehave and has dramatic unprovoked moodswings. He is extremely stubborn and seems almost schitzophrenic,as he can change from playing happily to being confrontational and even destructive instantly. There is no trigger and is there very worrying, especially as he his bad behaviour has now become dangerouos,he has built a small bonfire behind the garden shed, burnt crisps on the gas hob,and ,although he knows better, continues to take risks. If I scold him he barracades himself in his bedroom and is stubborn enough to remain there for many hours.I have now had to remove all the moveable furniture because if there was a fire I would be unable to get him out.
His elder brother is on medication for ADHD but has a completely different personality,is impulsive and hyperactive, but not moody and seemingly indifferent like Bradley.Could these traits also be associated with ADHD or are they more likely to be linked to a phobia of some kind? I would appreciate your opinion and advice.I look forward to hearing from you, many thanks, S,Avery

Sandra… I am afraid we can’t provide you any professional advises here. I would suggest you to bring Bradley to a counselor or therapist, especially when his behavior is risking the safety of himself and people around him.
