I want to watch Brokeback Mountain, but Where? When? How? It’s not going to show in Malaysia
No, Brokeback Mountain is not banned (yet) in Malaysia, the distributor of the movie didn’t even bother to submit the film for approval as it’s very much predicted it will be banned. True, Malaysia Film Censorship board are still censoring kiss scene in our movies, let alone gay movies..
Come on it’s 2006, why is it still needed for all these censorship? Everything can be access through internet, people can easily access porn or bomb making info if they wanted to, so why is it needed for so many censorship?
Also Malaysia have our movie rating system, which clarify what movies are suitable for all audience and what are suitable for above 18. Guess what.. the kiss scene are still censored in the “above 18″ category movies, come on the censorship board think we are nuts or what?
And it’s saddening that there are still discrimination to homosexual nowadays. It’s a fact that there’s a certain proportion of gay or lesbian in our society, it’s scientific proven that some of them are borned to be homosexual, so why it’s there still discrimanation on it? Some of the nicest people I have met are gay, so what?
It’s pity that Brokeback Mountain is not available in Malaysia, pity.

Whoa, that’s a lot of points raised in connection with one single movie. Sadly, those points have long been debated on this soil, and they only seem to stay. The censorship board – don’t bet on it. Loosening up on homosexuality – don’t bet on it. No matter how advanced/developed our nation is compared to others, it seems that we must always remain one of the most conservative.
Just get it from Uncle Ho. I watched Daredevil despite its ban here in Malaysia last time. No worries. Uncle Ho to the rescue. (See what I mean by “Censorship Board fuelling piracy”?)

February 27th, 2006 at 12:57 pm
llama.. pirated DVDs are not an option for me, I rather not watch the movie.
Honestly I want to watch Sin City more than Brokeback Mountain.. well I can understand that Sin City is a bit “violent” and not suitable for our brainful censorship..
For Brokeback, the distributor should at least try to get approval for the film, who knows.. the censorship board might just be having a nice day and grant the show.

Knowingly that the chance of showing this film in Malaysia is pretty slim, I watched it in Hong Kong uncensored. It is a very thoughtful, honest love where you can’t find these sort of honesty practically in this generation. The contrast of this show is not so much about homosexuality, but more on a relationship that maybe even happening to a man and a woman. The 2 main actors and the supporting actress did very well to express the stories within. Get a DVD and enoy the stories if Malaysia censorship board decided not to approve it.

Da 1st thing i thought aft reading da summary of that movie is pasar malam 4de DVD aint GSC/TGV la. Dontcha all think so?
Gay movie in Msia, thats like KL got no more jam 4da next50yrs! :p
March 5th, 2006 at 1:09 pm
Well I don’t really expect Malaysia to approve it.. probably that’s why the distributor of the film didn’t bother to submit it for approval.
I wonder what is the base for censorship board not to approve the movie? Well if it’s solely based on GAY, than I’ll call it discrimination
Pasar Malam DVD? It’s still a nope for me, rather not watch.

So disappointed Brokeback didn’t win. Ah well, at least we got a blog entry out of it
March 8th, 2006 at 10:01 am
Hi Jules.. I can’t say I’m disappointed, haven’t watch both film yet.
And guess what? I bet that “Crash” will not be shown in Malaysia as well, the racial content is probably more ‘controversial’ than gay.

Hi Jee,
I was wondering…if the censorship in malaysia is so strict, then does it also mean that there aren’t any movies produced in Malaysia on gays, lesbians, transverstites? Couldn’t find any at all online.
You see, I’m doing a project on movies in Southeast Asia for school.
March 7th, 2007 at 5:57 pm
zhao… I can’t recall Malaysia producing any movies with these kind of topics. Good luck with your project.
